Article 1: Name
Section 1. The name of this organization shall be Habeas Corpus:
University of Chicago Pre-Law Society.
Article II: Purpose
Section 1. The purpose of Habeas Corpus: The University of Chicago
Pre-Law Society is to provide students considering law school with helpful
information and resources as well as to foster as much contact with alumni and
other professionals in legal fields in order to provide students with a
realistic and educated view of the law and their options within such fields.
Article III: Filed of Membership
Section 1. Voting membership is limited to currently registered U of C
students, but any person wishing to participate in Habeas Corpus events and
programs, provided there is not limitation on the number of participants, is
welcome to attend.
Section 2. Active members are those members who have attended and
registered with the current Habeas Corpus secretary for at least two events or
programs each quarter. Special arrangements may be made with the board for
students unable to do so, but must be made in advance and confirmed by the
current Habeas Corpus president. In-active members will continue to receive
emails and may attend all Habeas Corpus events, but will not be eligible for
LSAT prep course scholarships, enrollment in programs of limited capacity, or
to run for office. Active membership will be reinstated at the end of the first
quarter in which the student fulfills the two-event requirement.
Article IV: Officers
Section 1. The Habeas Corpus board will consist of a President,
Vice-president, Secretary, Treasurer and Webmaster. Various committees will
also be formed on a year-by-year basis.
Section 2. Officers must be currently enrolled students at the
University of Chicago as well as active members of Habeas Corpus, at the time
of election. If an officer fails to fulfill the active membership requirements
and does not make arrangements with the board to make up the missed events,
they may be subject to impeachment.
Section3. All offices are held for one academic year.
Section 4. Habeas Corpus elections will be held mid-spring quarter of
each year. The current boards will appoint a non-candidate to run the elections
based on a majority vote of the attending active membership. New leaders will
then be trained by their predecessors before the end of the quarter and all
responsibilities transferred on the last day of spring quarter.
Section 6. Should it become necessary to remove an officer, for reasons
of unscrupulous behavior, lack of active member status, or failure to fulfill
activity the duties of his/her office, a majority vote of the board will be
sufficient to endorse re-election proceedings. The current office may run for
election again, except in the event that he/she is not longer an active member.
Elections will be handled in the manner laid out above.
Article V: Handling of Funds
Section 1. All funds collected will be deposited in Habeas Corpus' ORCSA
account.
Section 2. The treasurer shall be the primary officer designated to
handle organization finances.
Article VI: Amendments
Section 1. Bylaws may be amended by a majority vote of the current
board.
Section 2. Student membership must be given timely notice of all
amendments.
